<p><b>Pop Up Cities</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tech sector elites have long expressed their desires to escape regulation and, as they see it, a failing democracy. The allure of tech-friendly havens unbound by legacy rules and regulations is attracting frustrated tech billionaires and millionaires.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“This whole movement is about reinventing governance for the 21st century, inspired by start-ups and the internet,” says Patri Friedman, grandson of free-market economist Milton Friedman and founder of Pronomos Capital, a venture firm that invests in experimental cities.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Friedman seeks to create cities that operate like for-profit companies rather than under democratically elected officials. It’s reminiscent of Ayn Rand, who in Atlas Shrugged imagined a free-market enclave called Galt’s Gulch. The idea to create sovereign mini-countries, each governed by its own joint-stock corporation, is a challenge to global order. However, traditional forms of governance will not be in play. “We are funding companies that will operate non-democratic cities,” Friedman says. “And if you’re not into that, you shouldn’t move there.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the most advanced network state experiments is the Próspera domain. It is a gated private community in Honduras run by a Delaware-based company. The vision is to have a place where 1,000 residents can enjoy co-working spaces, a beach resort, and a golf course. As a “for-profit semi-autonomous zone,” Próspera will have low taxes, its own labour rules, and an arbitration system run by retired Arizona judges who hear cases online.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another iteration of the network state is the “pop-up city,” which is a sort of weeks-long temporary brainstorming town. In 2025, Edge City hosted a month-long pop-up in Patagonia. Five hundred attendees, or “residents,” took part in projects focused on artificial intelligence and longevity.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The idea of the pop-up city is to create a space for what Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin calls a “micro exit.” This is a temporary exit to experiment, and then “go back and spread those learnings around the world,” as Timour Kosters says, co-founder of Edge City, which advertises itself as a “society incubator.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Praxis, besides eyeing Greenland, recently announced plans to start a permanent “defence-focused spaceport city” called Atlas at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, which already houses Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin.</span></p>
<p><b>The Genesis of the Network State Concept</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The principal architect of the network state is Balaji Srinivasan, the former chief technology officer of Coinbase. He reimagined nations as digital communities. His theory is that internet companies, internet currencies, and internet communities will eventually fuse with nation-states. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">By leveraging cryptographic security, Decentralised Finance (DeFi), smart contracts, and Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (DAOs), Srinivasen sees network states as parallel institutions that offer greater autonomy and resilience against censorship or coercion.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are now various companies working towards the idea of a network state, including Praxis, Zuzalu, Prospera, and Nation3.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Srinivasen’s network state prioritizes shared values and digital connection over physical borders, “aiming to achieve sovereignty through collective action and economic strength,” much like a startup society built from the internet up.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2025, Srinivasen held a Network State Conference in Singapore, where Ethereum, Coinbase, Solana, Telegram, and many others gathered to discuss how to materialize their cloud communities into the physical world.</span></p>
<p><b>How The Network State Works:</b></p>
<ol>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Gather like-minded people online who share a vision and set of values.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Develop an internal economy, currency, and governance (like a DAO).</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Collectively purchase or build physical properties (houses, apartments, land) globally.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Digitally connect these scattered physical locations into a single, unified “state”.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Leverage its size and coherence to demand and eventually achieve sovereign status.</span></li>

<p><b>CONCLUSION</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The principles championed by the cypherpunk movement of the 1990s laid the foundation for using encryption to secure privacy, resist surveillance, and empower individuals against centralized control. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Throughout the 1990s, the tech industry was blind to the benefits of how software could provide decision-makers with valuable information about the health of the hardware that their companies run on. In fact, most hardware manufacturers include their monitoring software with their switches and routers. In this era of infrastructure build-out, organizations&#8217; on-premises switches, wide-area networks (WANs), and routers were often comprised of different vendors, each with its own brand of &#8220;afterthought&#8221; monitoring software. Rudimentary data was gathered, but nothing worked as a cohesive system. But the industry was sensing the benefits of robust reporting.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the early days of data center construction, pre-cloud, I had clients produce dashboards that collected energy use and data center aisle temperature for data center optimization. At this point, organizations could see how their data center portfolios were performing and optimize accordingly. I often compared this type of interface to an automobile&#8217;s dashboard, e.g., you probably would never buy a car without a dashboard that shows fuel level, charging voltage, oil temperature, and miles per hour.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">​I then began exploring how to build a unified dashboard for my company&#8217;s PR campaigns. However, in 2006, it was cost-prohibitive for a small start-up PR agency to spend 10s of thousands of dollars to create such a thing. This was a time when Microsoft was still charging $100s to use its office suite. I knew there was gold there, but I did not have the capital to mine the IP mountain. But! Things were quickly changing.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">​In the mid-2000s, Amazon introduced the industry to the &#8220;cloud,&#8221; and computing became &#8220;elastic.&#8221; Soon, software became &#8220;a service,&#8221; and I was getting closer to realizing my vision. Companies were now leveraging this elastic computing power to sell software services. New organizations quickly sprang up that purchased fractional computing to customize software services for their clients.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Storage and compute power prices had come down at this point, though they were still out of reach for a small agency. I spoke with a software developer about bringing my vision of a unified PR dashboard to life. After weeks of digital whiteboarding, we had a process mapped out. Then came the horse pill, the development price. Developing this accounted for nearly 10% of my company&#8217;s net revenue. I still had the passion, but not the profit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The problem is that agencies tend to point to impressions and outdated advertising value equivalency (AVE) metrics—vanity numbers that don&#8217;t connect press coverage to website traffic, lead generation, or revenue. Poor integration with other components of your security ecosystem, inability to real-time scan for lateral movement vulnerabilities, and overlooking the regular scanning of ABAP (advanced business application programming) code are all problems that need addressing.</p>
<p>This article will explain these inadequacies, omissions, and how to address them.</p>
<h5>Compliance ≠ Security</h5>
<p>The first thing to understand is that compliance does not necessarily equate to security. SAP GRC can help manage risk and ensure compliance with internal controls and regulations. However, as stated earlier, merely meeting audit requirements does not guarantee protection against cyberattacks. Locking your front door may satisfy stipulations in your insurance policy, but if you leave the windows open, burglars can still gain entrance. Compliance will not prevent cyberattacks.</p>
<h5>No Real-Time Threat Detection</h5>
<p>The second element to understand follows logically from the first: you must have real-time threat detection. Tools such as GRC are not designed to detect cyber threats as they happen. Notifications of attack will not be delivered if someone is attempting to log in with false credentials or accessing sensitive data at unusual times of the day (ie, outside regular business hours). If you do not have real-time detection, hackers may have already infiltrated your system days or even months ago.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s common for GRC tools to put risk assessments on a periodic schedule—say monthly, quarterly, or annually. If you&#8217;re delaying evaluation of risks for weeks or months, then you&#8217;re leaving your organization exposed. Itś essential to adhere to these schedules to avoid elevated risk exposure.</p>
<h5>Poor Integration = Blind Spots</h5>
<p>It&#8217;s common for GRC tools to have difficulty integrating with other components of your security ecosystem. For example, suppose these tools are not connected to SIEM systems, endpoint tools, or vulnerability scanners. In that case, you will have blind spots in your overall security posture and slower incident response times.</p>
<h5>Lack of Vulnerability Management</h5>
<p>Many organizations are unaware that SAP GRC does not scan for technical vulnerabilities. This results in problems such as outdated kernel patches, insecure transport, or misconfigured parameters that are not detected. These are just a few areas it misses. Vulnerabilities in custom code can also be exploited, and transport layers can become areas of risk, as well. Without automatic scanning and prioritization, your team may remain unaware of these weaknesses.</p>
<h5>Too Narrow a Focus</h5>
<p>GRC platforms have too narrow a focus. They primarily concentrate on identity and access management. What they do not concentrate on is determining who has access to specific resources and whether that access aligns with your policies. Once hackers penetrate your systems, they can move laterally, exploit vulnerabilities, or deploy malware—none of which is addressed by identity management tools.</p>
<h5>Custom Code: The Silent Risk</h5>
<p>And lastly, custom code is a silent risk. Most SAP environments rely heavily on custom ABAP code. However, custom code is often overlooked during standard security reviews. If you&#8217;re not scanning this code regularly, you render yourself susceptible to significant issues such as SQL injection, hardcoded passwords, and insecure integrations. These are some of the hackers&#8217; favorite weaknesses; attackers love them because they&#8217;re hard to detect and easy to exploit.</p>
<h5>Your SAP Landscape Requires a Strategy</h5>
<p>The ability to detect threats as they occur is crucial. Real-time monitoring gives you immediate visibility into suspicious activities, policy violations, and unauthorized changes. Continuously scanning your SAP environment for vulnerabilities and ranking them based on severity is paramount for prioritizing fixes. And when your SAP alerts are connected to your SIEM, you can respond to threats in context and act quickly and effectively.</p>
<p>Additionally, automated code scanning tools enable you to identify vulnerabilities before they are exploited. Embedding security checks into your development process (also known as DevSecOps) will help ensure that every new release is thoroughly vetted and secured. This will reduce attack surfaces and create a culture of security in your SAP lifecycle.</p>

<p>System governance, proper detection, and reliable vulnerability management, along with an integrated system that covers the entire SAP stack, are optimal protection. GRC tools have importance, but they do not provide complete protection. A strong SAP security posture requires:</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since the 1990s, China has built and maintained a monopoly over rare earth minerals, which are key components in cell phones, computers, renewable energy technology, electric vehicles, military weapons, and many other electronic products. Rare earth minerals, however, are not rare despite their name. They are found in significant quantities worldwide, but they are difficult to extract and refine.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Data centers in the U.S. rely on China for rare earth minerals used in batteries. Reliable power is key to successful data center operations, and batteries have become increasingly critical for backup power. It might be alarming to realize that the data centers powering America’s artificial intelligence industry are reliant on China.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Electricity is not simply a utility,” the A.I. giant OpenAI said in an October [2025] </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">letter</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. “It’s a strategic asset that will secure our leadership on the most consequential technology since electricity itself.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Besides data centers, the U.S. military is also concerned about China’s control over rare earths. The Tomahawk missile’s accuracy is enabled by magnets made of samarium, a rare-earth metal processed almost exclusively in China. Ukraine needs millions of rare-earth batteries from China to power its drones, lasers, and other weapons.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To put it simply: China has rare earth dominance, and a reliable supply of rare earth minerals is a critical component of every nation’s energy security, which is really indistinguishable from national security.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The demand for rare earth minerals assures that, for governments and corporations, 2026 is going to be about finding deposits, or at least workarounds. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">NASA</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> has already been put to the task. Flying planes more than 10 miles above the Earth, NASA is currently involved in a mapping project designed to locate minerals in the U.S.</span></p>

<p><b>How China Got Its Stranglehold on Rare Earths</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2025, China used its rare earth monopoly to cut off Western companies&#8217; access, and when it did, industry giants such as Ford and Tesla were rattled, forcing the U.S. to the table for trade talks. But how did China get such power?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beginning in the 1990s, the Chinese government provided financial support to the country’s leading mineral companies, passed laws preventing foreign companies from buying rare earth mines in China, and banned the export of rare earth technologies. Eventually, it consolidated its rare earth industry into a few giant players, giving it further leverage over prices.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The result was that China created a </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">supply chain</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of mines and refineries. When the U.S. tried to reignite its rare earth enterprises, China flooded the market with minerals, throwing Western producers into a </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">tailspin</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As Western rare earth companies’ valuations collapsed from the low prices caused by soaring Chinese production, they were forced to slow their expansions, and in some cases, sell their mines to Chinese buyers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Beijing had a methodical approach to dominating the industry—and it now accounts for around 90% of global refined supply.</span></p>

<p><b>Batteries In The Military</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The auto industry has long faced the problem of Chinese battery dominance, but now this disparity is being viewed as a </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">national security threat</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Currently, the U.S. relies on Chinese supply chains for batteries to power its weapons programs. The U.S. needs alternative sources of rare earths so that its ability to make weapons does not depend on the goodwill of a potential adversary. Breaking China’s rare earth monopoly is crucial for America’s national security.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Every Chinese export restriction since 2022 has reverberated directly onto the battlefield,” said </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Catarina Buchatskiy</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a defense expert at the Snake Island Institute, which focuses on military technology.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lasers, handheld radios, night-vision goggles, satellites, and drones all use batteries that contain rare earth elements. The average soldier carries as much as 25 pounds of batteries for a standard 72-hour patrol.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Elaine K. Dezenski</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">, an expert on geopolitical risk and supply-chain security at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said, “When we think about the future of manufacturing and defense, and how we should be protecting critical supply chains, the chips are the brain, and batteries are the heart.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Europe</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> faces a more aggressive Russia and an increasingly isolationist America, it, too, is realizing that it must break China’s control over rare earths. The EU imports about 98 percent of its rare earths from China. After Beijing tightened export controls on rare earth elements in 2025, EU President </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ursula von der Leyen</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> was forced to take steps to diversify the bloc’s supply chains of rare earth elements.</span></p>

<p><b>The U.S. Needs to Break China’s Grip On Rare Earths</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Trump administration has taken some steps to end China’s </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">dominance</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> of rare earths. In July of 2025, the Defense Department invested $400 million to take a 15 percent stake in MP Materials, a Texas company that owns a rare earth mine in California.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In Texas, men dressed in head-to-toe protective gear dip giant ladles into a well of molten metal heated to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. They’re making something the U.S. has hardly, if ever, produced at a commercial scale in recent decades: Rare earth metals.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This Texas facility is completing a supply chain so it can start converting large quantities of its minerals into high-grade magnets. As a result, the company has entered into agreements to produce magnets for Apple and General Motors. This facility and the mine it controls in California (which is now the largest source of rare earth minerals in the Western Hemisphere) are a billion-dollar bet that an American company can take on China.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, constructing all the mines, refineries, and factories needed to provide an alternative to Chinese supplies will take years. Beyond ventures such as MP Materials, the </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">administration</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is also seeking to pursue deep-sea mining projects and partner with African mines that are not yet under Chinese control.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Trump administration understands that the U.S. must find sources of rare earths outside of China, which is why it has established a policy of buying ownership stakes in private companies it deems essential to national security. The Defense Department will take a 10 percent stake in a rare earth mine in Alaska, and the government also announced an equity deal with a North Carolina-based start-up that makes rare earth magnets.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Officials estimate it will take more than </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">$3 billion</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in investment to reshore supply chains.</span></p>
<p><b>Three Innovative Rare Earth Companies</b></p>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Phoenix Tailings</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is a U.S. start-up seeking to break China’s rare earth monopoly. Recently, they began producing metal in New Hampshire and are using new processing methods to compete with Chinese suppliers. The metal will be used to make electric vehicle motors and maybe fighter jets. Phoenix Tailings has been awarded more than $6 million in federal funding.</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Metal making is the final step in the long, often fragmented process of rare earth refining. Eventually, Phoenix Tailings aims to control all of those stages, taking in waste from iron mining — known as tailings — removing the rare earths and separating them into individual elements to be made into metal.</span></p>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Arnold Magnetic Technologies</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a Rochester, New York-based manufacturer of samarium-cobalt magnets, realized that America’s ability to produce missiles was threatened during the recent tariff war. So, they stepped up to keep the supply chain flowing. The Tomahawk missiles’ accuracy is possible because their fins use powerful magnets made of samarium — a rare earth metal that can tolerate high heat. Unless new sources of samarium, or a substitute, can be found, America won’t be able to build precision-guided missiles or fighter jets. Luckily, Arnold Magnetic Technologies had over a year’s supply of the metal on hand when China announced its export controls on April 4th of 2025.</span></li>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span></p>

<li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Conifer</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a start-up in Sunnyvale, California, has developed a compact, disc-shaped electric motor that operates without rare earth magnets. Weary of geopolitics, car companies are now looking for ways to replace rare earth magnets in electric motors, including windshield wiper motors and mechanisms that adjust seats. Magnets made with the rare earth elements neodymium, dysprosium, and terbium are essential for the motors that move electric vehicles and hybrids. BMW is using motors without neodymium or other rare earths in models like the iX sport utility vehicle.</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Other exciting possibilities have arisen in North Carolina, where Vulcan Elements, a magnet maker, plans to supply the military starting next year. Another company in Texas, Noveon Magnetics Inc., has signed a deal to supply U.S.-made rare earth magnets for Japan’s Nidec, which is among the world’s biggest motor makers. And a German magnet company, VAC, is expected to begin operating a large, Pentagon-funded factory in South Carolina later this year.</span></p>
<p><b>CONCLUSION</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The U.S. has signed trade deals for the mining and refining of rare earths with Australia, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. The U.S. also has significant underground reserves of rare earth elements. Both are good news, because China has powerful leverage over the U.S. through rare earth metals, which are essential to cars, fighter jets, drones, smartphones, computers, M.R.I. machines, and a wide array of electronics.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s great that a Texas company with a California mine (MP Materials) has stepped up to take on China; however, the magnets are likely to be 50% more expensive to produce than China’s, which is now actually </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">tweaking</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> magnet formulas to avoid using certain restricted rare earth elements and devising ways to make superior magnets without rare earths.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When China put restrictions on rare earth exports in 2025, it cut off the supply of rare earth metals to U.S. defense contractors. That forced the U.S. to make a deal with two European companies, which gave it access to a new but limited </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">source</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The administration has also given an $80 million loan to an Indiana firm that is using new technology to process rare earth elements. And a Canadian company has received $22.4 million in grant funding from the U.S. military to build a facility in Louisiana dedicated to producing rare earth elements.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Protecting U.S. access to rare earths needs to be a bipartisan, long-term project. The need is glaring! However, the federal government must be careful with picking winners and losers. It might be best to keep in mind the notion that when a government starts deciding which companies deserve special treatment, the result isn’t prosperity—it’s distortion. It’s always been supposed that the free market allocates resources best when prices reflect real costs. Political promises can cross those signals, short-circuiting efficiency and innovation.</span></p>

<p><b>ADDENDUM: RARE EARTH SOURCES OTHER THAN CHINA</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Japan</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> has met its rare earth needs by importing minerals from Australia. Japan’s program depends on government subsidies. Without it, it would not be profitable for private companies to make the investments needed to mine and process rare earths and compete with China’s heavily subsidized products.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Brazil</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> has 23% of global reserves of rare earth minerals, second only to China, but its production is still at an early stage, accounting for only 1% of the worldwide market. Minaçu, a small city in Brazil, is set to become the first rare earth mining operation outside Asia to produce rare earth on a commercial scale.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Greenland</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> and its rare earth reserves are on President Trump’s radar. The administration has reportedly been engaged in negotiations to invest in mining operations located in Greenland. Greenland is believed to have significant oil deposits and a variety of minerals, including rare earth elements.</span></p>

Shanghai-based marketing company, PLTFRM, says it has deployed avatars across Chinese e-commerce sites like Alibaba&#8217;s Taobao and Pinduoduo, the sister site of Temu. These avatars rely on AI video models and large language models to generate scripts. They are programmed to share basic information about what they&#8217;re selling, as well as greet the audience and respond to questions. Companies switching to AI avatars are seeing sales rise by up to 30 percent. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A recent report by the online creation platform Kapwing found that computer-generated celebrities are amassing millions of followers — and dollars — for the teams behind them. An AI</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/03/style/ai-influencers-lil-miquela-mia-zelu.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">influencer</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> named &#8220;Miquela&#8221; has appeared on magazine covers, released music, and served as the face of campaigns for Calvin Klein and Prada, all while purporting to be a Brazilian American teen from Downey, Calif.</span></p>
<p><b>Growth</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">AI spending is propping up the U.S. economy. The trillions of dollars that tech companies are investing in new data centers are starting to contribute to economic</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/27/business/economy/ai-investment-economic-growth.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">growth</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The substantial investment in data centers, semiconductor factories, and power supply required to build the computing power that AI demands is boosting the U.S. economy. Investment in software and computer equipment, not counting the data center buildings, accounted for a quarter of all economic growth this past year, data from the Commerce Department shows. </span></p>
<p><b>Power</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Electricity rates for individuals and small businesses could</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/14/business/energy-environment/ai-data-centers-electricity-costs.html?unlocked_article_code=1.eE8.DMwG.Lnbt-gp35wJF" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">rise</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> sharply as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and other technology companies build data centers and expand into the energy business. Computers training and running AI systems consume far more energy than machines that stream Netflix or TikTok. A rush to build power plants and transmission lines is on, as big tech companies pivot to AI, and this boom threatens to drive up power bills for residents and small businesses.</span></p>
<p><b>Doctors</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Physicians are using AI for</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/28/well/ai-making-doctors-worse-deskilling.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">diagnoses</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. It has aided them in spotting cancer, to make diagnoses faster, and helped them more accurately predict who&#8217;s at risk of complications. However, a study found that after just three months of using an AI tool designed to help identify precancerous growths, doctors were significantly less effective at finding the growths on their own.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Artificial intelligence is being used to detect hidden signs of consciousness in comatose patients, and it is identifying these</span><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s43856-025-01042-y" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">signs</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> long before doctors notice them. Using an algorithm, the researchers were able to analyze patients&#8217; facial movements, including tiny changes that were too discrete to be visually noticeable, but could be clinically meaningful. Known as &#8220;covert consciousness,&#8221; people in this state can respond to cues through their brain activity, even as they appear to be completely comatose.</span></p>
<p><b>Antitrust</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To help resolve a</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/02/technology/google-search-antitrust-decision.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">monopoly</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> issue, a judge ordered Google to share its search results with competitors. In an attempt to level the tech playing field, Google was ordered to hand over some of its search data to rivals. The ruling in United States et al. v. Google, LLC. comes as generative artificial intelligence is threatening to replace traditional search engines. The judge wrote that the emergence of generative AI &#8220;changed the course of this case.&#8221; </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On August 25, 2025, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI. The suit alleges that the partnership between Apple and OpenAI is an anti-competitive</span><a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/elon-musk-sues-apple-and-openai-alleging-they-are-stifling-ai-competition" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">conspiracy</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> meant to stifle rival AI companies and protect the iPhone&#8217;s dominance by manipulating App Store rankings to favor ChatGPT. As of the time of writing this article, the case is in its early stages.</span></p>
<p><b>Hallucination</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A recent paper from OpenAI researchers sheds new light on why large language models (LLMs) are prone to &#8220;hallucination,&#8221; or</span><a href="https://openai.com/index/why-language-models-hallucinate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">fabricating</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> information. According to the paper, the evaluation methods that major AI companies use encourage overconfidence. Performance tests often take the form of multiple-choice questions. Correct answers can unintentionally reward models for guessing. By optimizing their systems to achieve a high score on these evaluations, AI companies are training their models to be good test-takers instead of actually improving their overall accuracy. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">AI gets criticized because it makes up information that appears to be factual, known as hallucinations. In science, however, AI hallucinations can be remarkably useful. One of the most significant breakthroughs aided by AI is protein folding prediction, which accurately predicts the 3D structure of proteins. This fundamental molecular process greatly accelerates drug discovery and the understanding of diseases. In October of 2024, David Baker shared the</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/23/science/ai-hallucinations-science.html#:~:text=Recently%2C%20Dr.,new%20catheter%20avoids%20the%20word." target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">Nobel Prize</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in Chemistry for his pioneering research on proteins. Dr. Baker said his lab had taken a new step forward in creative imaginings with AI. The Nobel committee praised him for discovering how to build entirely new kinds of proteins not found in nature, calling his feat “almost impossible.”</span></p>
<p><b>Apocalypse</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Eliezer Yudkowsky wants to shut it all down. For the past 20 years, he&#8217;s been warning AI insiders about its danger; now he&#8217;s going public with his message that building powerful AI systems is a terrible idea, one that will end in</span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/12/technology/ai-eliezer-yudkowsky-book.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">disaster</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. &#8220;If any company or group, anywhere on the planet, builds an artificial superintelligence using anything remotely like current techniques, based on anything remotely like the present understanding of A.I., then everyone, everywhere on Earth, will die,&#8221; he writes.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><b>CONCLUSION</b></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The printing press was a significant advancement for propagating the news. However, with the truth came a lot of lies&#8211;so much disinformation was being spread in 17th-century England that King Charles banned publications from all foreign presses. The combustion engine drove the Industrial Revolution and trains across continents; it also contributed to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The telephone allowed us to talk to grandma, but it also permitted marketing scams. Splitting the atom ushered in an era of nuclear fission, behind the ability to generate massive amounts of clean, carbon-free electricity; it also killed many.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The era of AI is here. Its benefits and detriments have yet to be fully worked out — and both depend on what we do (and don&#8217;t do) now.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The alarming and sad fact is that some individuals have financial or power incentives to intentionally disseminate false or misleading narratives to targeted audiences through select channels. Two examples are financial fraud and character assassination. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At this point, we must clarify that disinformation and misinformation are distinct, although they tend to blend into each other, becoming fuzzy at their edges. Disinformation is a deliberate lie, while misinformation is more about sharing inaccurate information by mistake. So, for our purposes, we set the following definitions:  </span></p>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Misinformation = unintentional spread of false information.</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Disinformation = intentional creation and spread of false information to deceive.</span></li>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The summit was held under the auspices of the University of Cambridge&#8217;s code on free speech, which has freedom of thought and expression as core values. The university, as stated in the code, &#8220;encourages staff, students and visitors to engage in robust, challenging, evidence-based and civil debate as a core part of academic inquiry…. even if you find the viewpoints expressed to be disagreeable, unwelcome or distasteful.&#8221;</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It was reiterated throughout the summit that it is imperative to question the veracity of narratives before they are shared or even believed. Additionally, the summit was scientifically based and devoid of any particular political bias, as tomorrow&#8217;s disinformation actors may have completely different incentives and objectives. Keeping the focus on the underlying core architecture that applies to all forms of information-fueled harm campaigns is seen as a benefit for the future.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many issues were discussed at the summit; here, we will focus on the issues of free speech and the dangers associated with disinformation. </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><b>Free Speech &amp; Algorithms</b></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.norabenavidez.com/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Nora Benavidez</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, a civil rights and free speech attorney, moderated a</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKI6zlt1kxw"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">discussion</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on freedom of access to information, during which it was pointed out that even the scientists who study disinformation are now under attack. Some downplay the harm of disinformation to maintain or gain power. They reshape the narrative to say that those who research disinformation are attacking free speech.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Adam Price, a member of the Welsh Senedd,</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5_t089kN6E"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">explained</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that we&#8217;re now in a world where algorithms are protected from free speech. We must ask, for example, whether choosing the information people see during an election is a form of protected free speech. Algorithms restrict people&#8217;s freedom of access to information. The hedge, he went on to elucidate, against the Nazis in Europe surrounding World War Two was to make it a criminal offense to spread false rumors. Finland, Czechoslovakia, and Switzerland were the only countries that passed these kinds of laws — and they did not succumb internally to fascism. </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">His point was that we must defend democracy from the enemies of democracy by making the spreading of deliberate deception for ideological reasons a criminal offense. His example was that there are laws that criminalize lies in advertising and laws that hold a company director accountable for lying when they&#8217;re in the process of selling shares, but with politics, it&#8217;s been a free-for-all.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">EU MP Alexandra Geese</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxinGwGepZc"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">talked</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> about mechanisms, such as like-engagement ranking, and how they are limiting what people choose. The shocking stuff gets a lot of views, but is it freely chosen when it&#8217;s presented as the only option for viewing on social media platforms? </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Former UK MP Damian Collins</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqsqG36goZg"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">shared</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that, unfortunately, today, some things aren&#8217;t true being pushed on social media feeds to capture attention, as money is being made from capturing that attention. His essential point was that interfering in other countries&#8217; elections is widely illegal, so shouldn&#8217;t platforms that do this be held responsible? Without truth, you can&#8217;t have a national discourse. The crisis of truth is undermining the very fabric of democracy.  </span></p>

<p><b>Threats &amp; Harm</b></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dr Julia Ebner</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bD0GsGmU5gQ"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">explained</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that it&#8217;s a diverse landscape of threats. When it comes to anti-vaxxers, white supremacists, and jihadists, there is not one solution for all of these types of threats. That said, it is women who stand out. Disinformation campaigns disproportionately target them. This affects women in journalism, research, politics, and other fields. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For women, the scale and the nature of the threat are different, and if you&#8217;re also from a minority background, then you get even more hatred. Male supremacist trends have surged in recent years, and there&#8217;s a substantial uptick in youth radicalization. Young boys are increasingly vulnerable and susceptible to becoming part of some of these radical groups. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over the last decade, numerous disinformation campaigns have targeted researchers and journalists. They have been perceived as political opponents. There has been a</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do9YpWK-8-I"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">substantial rise</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in doxing, which involves posting personal information such as home addresses, office addresses, phone numbers, and bank details. Over the last few years, both the scale and nature of these threats have undergone significant changes. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">UNC Professor Alice Marwick</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZfxKkqrrRs"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">explained</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> how online harassment often prompts targeted individuals to go offline. The online threats can push people out of the public eye. The threats have been so hurtful and harmful that even high-profile public figures have left online discourse because they do not want to risk putting themselves or their families in danger. The result is that particular voices (i.e., minority voices) are pushed out of the public sphere.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the themes that arose most often in the summit was how social media algorithms don&#8217;t enhance human connection. As substacker</span><a href="https://www.notesfromthecircus.com/p/the-magical-thinking-thats-killing"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">Mike Brock</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> explained, algorithms replace human connection with &#8220;engineered engagement designed to maximize screen time rather than genuine relationships. The algorithms don&#8217;t help us make better choices—they manipulate our choices through carefully calibrated dopamine hits that bypass conscious decision-making entirely.&#8221; So, meeting and talking to people is essential. For, as BBC Social Media Investigations correspondent Marianna Spring</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hW7RzZBE4gE"> <span style="font-weight: 400;">discussed</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, social media can distort the way people behave and notions of what&#8217;s acceptable.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Several methods for combating disinformation were outlined, including laws that prohibit disinformation, transparency in disinformation research, and community engagement (e.g., organizing an event to promote a banned book). But one of the most effective ways discussed to combat disinformation is through the use of AI. Although automation, AI, and bots have been exacerbating the disinformation problem by amplifying disinformation campaigns worldwide, driving up the volume of disinformation, and micro-targeting it, AI can also be designed to mitigate some of the worst aspects of polarization and identify disinformation. </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">AI can be both a danger and an effective mechanism for responding to that danger. But that relies on the people who train it, maintain it, and use it. And so, yes, AI can play a critical role, but if we launch AI in the same way we launch social media, absent any guardrails to mitigate misuse, the problem could end up magnifying.</span></p>
